Crazy patterns

Just before Christmas I was given a couple of pieces of this mystery wood by a friend of mine. It was cut from a property in Rydal, Cumbria where once Mr William Wordsworth lived. We don't know exactly what it is but I do know them's some beautiful patterns.

Along with not knowing the tree ID I also don't know what I'm going to make of it! But that is the beauty of having a workshop in which these characterful little gems can lurk until the day the fancy takes me...
